WEEKLY NEWS 2008NCM News 250 6 September 2008JERRY REED, star of stage, studio and screen, has died. Born Jerry Reed Hubbard, he suffered from emphysema and was in hospice care. He was 71. Asked by NCM’s Paul Davis to account for his versatility, talent and success, he sets aside his joking for awhile and Jerry’s reply is philosophical. “I’ll tell you what I tell everybody else. I was never formally trained as a guitarist, a singer, songwriter or actor; but I did them all in my fifty one years in show business and, I think, been kinda successful. So, I know in my heart that God sends us all here with certain gifts, and I believe He determines the course of one’s life. I’m sure He provides whatever time and desire one needs to accomplish one’s dreams! The gospel song – ‘A Brand New Me’ is absolutely biographical. I’m happy to say that I’m now well-grounded in my faith and love for Jesus Christ.” The song is featured on the next NCM Following the success of They've Cancelled Christmas in Bethlehem (The Wall Must Fall) GARTH HEWITT releases a new EP, ‘Bethlehem Palestine’ in November. Now this summer, the Grand Ole Opry legend has recorded a new, timely version called "Gasoline" along with some help from his friends "the Oil Spots" (aka The Moody Brothers). The single has just been released to all country music stations across the country. With recent audience reactions when George performs the song at the Opry, in churches and music festivals around the world, this new version may also be on its way of becoming a classic. And Finally… Here’s my comments regarding the oft-stated suggestion that there is “good and bad” in the recent Lakeland, Florida experience. The Scriptures are clear in many places that "the Light shines into the darkness", but events like this often attract the 'immature spiritually'. How do they discern the difference between “good and bad”? We are all guilty of seeking the “spectacular” rather than the quiet Truth. Regarding the alleged resurrections; kicking an old lady in the face, etc., I just wonder if the Holy Spirit is prepared to work alongside deceivers or false prophets? I just feel that to say it is a “true mix” of “good and bad” can be more dangerous rather than making an outright decision. I know that you can say in many churches there is “a mix” when the Holy Spirit genuinely moves in people, and then someone stands up and says something that seems “way out”. But in many cases the fault lies with the Oversight in not discerning and stating the truth or falseness of things that 'disturb'. The main problem, I find with all these types of 'experiences', is the division they cause between believers. There is only person interested in division among believers. And Finally… I have permission from Simon Gillebaud to use extracts from his book 'For what its worth' , Darren Mangold (BBC Radio Notts) Setbacks….. This man had a disastrous attempt in the world of business. He switched to politics but within only one year that didn’t work out either. He tried his hand for a second time at business, but failed again. That meant three failures in three years. He proposed to his fiancée after four years of courtship but she turned him down. Another woman he was courting died some time later. All these pressures led to a nervous breakdown, which required two years of convalescence after which he relaunched his aborted political career with a bid to be elected as speaker of the House of Representatives. He failed. He was again defeated two years later for the position of elector. Another three years after this, he was defeated as he ran for a seat in Congress. Another five years passed before he sought office again, but was defeated. Tragically his four year old son died during this time. That led to seven years in the wilderness, before running for the senate- to no avail. Things looked more positive the following year, when he was nominated by his party as their vice- presidential candidate, but his running mate and he were defeated in the general election. He failed two years later when trying again for a seat in the senate. However, another two years later, in 1860, after twenty four years of dogged perseverance, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the United States of America!
