WEEKLY NEWS 2004NCM NEWS(w/e 17th December 2004)FEB (Federation of European Broadcasters) are proud to announce that on 13th May a training day for Christian artists is going to be held. It is taking place in Oxfordshire and is for Christian artists who minister in schools. The day aims to explore how to integrate children with special needs into activities and learning in mainstream schools. For more information email admin@cre8ed.com or tel: +44 1494 882073. Did you know MICHAEL W SMITH has started up his own film company called ‘Seabourne Pictures’? He and his son RYAN began the company soon after Michael appeared in the movie THE SECOND CHANCE. UCB (United Christian Broadcasters) are holding their 8th International Conference, with the theme ‘Excellence In Broadcasting’ from 9-12 June at Yarfield Conference Centre in Staffordshire. Topics include ‘Presenter or Preacher’, ‘The Way Forward for Christian TV and Christian Production’ and ‘What makes a great radio show?” for more information contact Liz Bozier-Lown at conference@ucb.co.uk or visit www.ucb.co.uk . You must be feeling in the Christmas spirit by now, so why not take the opportunity to be entertained and challenged at ‘Wow! That’s What I Call Christmas’ with JOHN FROUD and MARK GREENWOOD? John will be sharing the gospel through song and chat and Mark will keeping the crowd laughing with his special kind of entertainment. Here’s where to catch them: Tonight! – Goldthorpe Elim Church, Beever Street, Goldthorpe – 7.00pm Sunday 19 December – Dewsbury Elim Sunday 19 December – Halifax Elim Church, Hall Street, Halifax – 6.00pm Monday 20 December – Buttershaw Baptist Church, The Crescent, Buttershaw, Bradford For more information phone 01274 580817 The launch of the "Down By The Riverside" CD on ICC by ROD WATTS & MIKE BRETT has been successful. Rod writes, "We enjoyed a full happy-hour with TIM DAYKIN at BBC SOLENT last Sunday, and an interview at BBC SCR with JOHN RADFORD is currently lining up for next Sunday. NCM feedback has been fantastic, with reports already coming back to us that we have been play-listed in New Zealand in at least 2 instances. Number 3 last week and number 2 this week in the NCM Euro charts is quite a surprise, I must say, and a very pleasant one of course." http://www.rodwatts.btinternet.co.uk/ AMERICAN IDOL winner RUBEN STUDDARD’s gospel album has gone straight into the number one spot of the US Gospel Music Charts as the highest selling debut gospel album! ‘I Need An Angel’ is Ruben’s second album, the first going multi platinum. The album has taken the highest selling debut accolade that KIRK FRANKLIN’s album ‘Nu Nation Project’ has held since 1998. One of the songs on the album is BILL and GLORIA GAITHER’s ‘Center Of My Joy’. ALAN GIBSON has given NCM an update from LARRY’ NORMAN'S USA Office, "During his last angiogram, Larry’s artery was damaged and a significant fistula resulted when they cut into his femoral artery between the hip and groin. It is a “leak” like a puncture in a garden hose, and it needs to be surgically closed. The doctors have identified his need for it, but the insurance company won’t give him their permission because they contend that it is not an immediate risk to his life. However, it is pushing him toward the final curtain, and is presently contributing to his “congestive heart failure” problems and also to the continuing death of his cells and nerves because of his lessened circulation. Surgery would fix his fistula so we are praying that God will show us what to do next, and that we’ll have saved enough money to be able to do it. Also, Larry needs to pay for rehabilitation and additional specialists. His congestive heart failure is directly affecting the health of his kidneys and liver. His cardiologist has moved and Larry currently has no heart doctor taking care of his problems. The human body is like a complex eco–system of interlocking organs and tissues. The failure of one organ brings about the failure of another. Larry is getting sicker and this operation could stop his digression. So please pray that if it is God’s Will that Larry will receive more medical help and that we will be able to raise enough money to pay for it. www.larrynorman.uk.com If you are free on New Year’s Eve, then there may not be a better place that to be than at NEW WINE CHURCH in London. They have a great line up including the very popular NCM artist CLAUDETTE. For more information go to www.newwine.co.uk or www.claudetteschlitter.com From Tennessee, MARY MURRELL writes to say that she penned this while driving in a torrential rain storm so violent she could barely see the road... Wrapped in His Mercy Covered By His Grace His Love Surrounds Me With His Strength I Can Face Any Problem I Encounter While Walking On This Earthly Place Oh Jesus, I'm Thankful, Really Thankful For Your Mercy & Grace. GRAHAM KENDRICK’s MAKE WAY MUSIC has been going through a rethink over the past few months and it seems as though some firm decisions have been made about the future of Graham’s music. From November all of Graham’s products that were previously released by Make Way Music are going to be handled by Fierce! Distribution. And from January 1st Make Way Music and Graham’s ministry will be handled by MARK JOHNSON. The restructure is to give Graham more opportunity and time to focus on more ‘direct aspects of his ministry’. He is set to go to Korea, Canada and the USA his year and has been working on songs for SPRING HARVEST 2005 and for the charity CARE. Last week we told you about the strange nativity scene at MADAM TUSAUDS, which had DAVID and VICTORIA BECKHAM as Mary and Joseph, and GEORGE BUSH as a wise man. Well no sooner had it been unveiled when a mystery man punched and pushed over the wax figures, before running out into the street. Madam Tusauds have now removed the scene from public display. Here’s the Christmas chart we promised… There's more news afterwards! FRASERBURGH GOSPEL MUSIC CONVENTION 29th April – 1st May, in Scotland. Here’s who will be appearing: KAREN PECK (USA), NEW RIVER (USA), GUTTANE (Norway), FELICITY SARDENA (Gibraltar), HEAVEN BOUND (Northern Ireland), INHERITANCE (England) and SILOA CHOIR (Faroe Islands). For more information about the Fraserbugh Gospel Music Convention contact 01779 490956. The second date for the diary is the 6th WHITBY GOSPEL MUSIC FESTIVAL, 20th-22nd May. Here are just some of the acts already booked: GEORGE HAMILTON IV, MICHAEL HARCUS BAND, GUS EYRE, CRYSTAL CLEAR, THE GARDINER FAMILY, PAUL WHEATER, VOICES OF FAROE and the WGMC House band! For more information go to www.paulwheater.com . Looks like we are in for another exciting year! Ace Christian songwriter, JOHN STALLINGS from Florida writes, "It's good to see our song still being used. The fact that 'Take a look' is nothing more or less than the 'simple gospel story' makes the airing of the song all the more gratifying. Praise the Lord! An unexpected extra from our being on the NCM charts is recent renewed contact with old friend LARRY FORD. Neither of us knew where the other was until we saw our names on the same chart. Larry sleeps with a lock on his chin so that no one can steal that golden voice of his. Kidding, but not about the great voice. His song 'This Is How It Feels To Be Free' is a gem. We forward all the NCM charts we get to friends all over the world spreading the good news of the impact NCM is making. To God be the glory. It all goes to show that there's nothing so magnetic as the Gospel in song. JUDA and I keep the CD in the car and play it constantly and I haven't heard a bad song yet." Thanks for the encouragement John. The NED KELLY BAND have just released a new CD album and also a live DVD and will be featuring a single soon on NCM. (sales@secretarial-services.org.uk ). Our friends at REVELATION TV have written this week with a summing up of their year. They write, “These last few weeks have been times of real blessing for us here and for this we thank God. He has enabled us to continue with our vision of reaching the UK with the gospel of hope, delivered in a straightforward manner, with a real, prophetic edge.” Obviously a TV station does not run on thin air and ‘red-tape’ stops the station asking for financial assistance on air, but if you would like to contribute contact the website www.revelationtv.com/so.htm “If you can't help us at these time then please consider us in your prayers…we would like to bless you at this Christmas time. We ask God for every blessing to you in the name of Jesus our Messiah and may the New Year bring you into a closer walk with Him.” A few corrections to the NCM chart this week, TOM TRAVIS was quick to spot that ‘Hey, Who Said You Can’t Go Home’ was in the chart twice this week! Of course the second song was ‘The Darkest Hour’. There was also a mistake with the numberings, so make sure you check out the correct (we hope!) chart above! NEWSBOYS have offered their fans the opportunity to download their new song ‘Isaiah’ from iTunes. The exclusive song can be listened to if you download the ‘Devotion’ album. We took a big step this week with help from the guys at VALTEX, NCM voting can now be done online!! Many NCMdisc recipients found it much easier to email their comment sheets to us, so in response we have created a simple reaction sheet for you to use online. Please make sure that you vote for all artists regardless of genre and feel free to add your comment for each song – the artists and record companies really do find them useful and encouraging. Another advantage of this system is there is plenty of room to tell us a bit more about who hears your music, which radio stations your programmes are syndicated to, and where they are broadcast. Of course, you can still get in touch as you have always done, via fax, email and letter – we like seeing stamps from overseas! Talking of stamps, STAMPS FOR CHRISTIAN MISSIONS, would love to receive donations of used stamps. The stamps are sold on and the monies raised go to missions across the world. We all know that stamps are valuable and yet many thousands are thrown in the bin every day. During the Christmas season when dozens of envelopes drop through your door, why not collect the stamps and give them to a worthwhile cause? Why not get your church or office involved too? For more information go to www.S4CM.org.uk What a brave man SCATTERED FEW’s ALLAN AGUIRRE is… Allan hasn’t just got one wife to contend with, but he took on someone else’s too for a TV show! The Aguirre family took part in the popular ‘WIFE SWAP’ TV programme on ABC in America (Channel 4 in UK), the programme takes two families that are ‘poles apart’ in lifestyles and swap the wives for two weeks. The first week the wife has to live the same lifestyle as her ‘adoptive’ family following rules laid down by the original wife, but on the second week, she can take the helm and run the household as she wishes. Long haired and unusually attired Allan, is a big name in the Christian Alternative music scene - having worked with bands Spy Glass Blue and Scattered Few - Allan’s family were described by ABC TV channel as the ‘Christian Osbornes’! So who more contrasting to team them up with than a conservative Southern Baptist Family from South Carolina! Should be interesting! Who is the NCM artist who manages to trick us every time he phones by putting on an English accent..? LARRY FORD! Larry lived for some time in the UK and his brother, an opera singer, still lives in London. His songs have been very popular on the NCM charts, with ‘Belleau Wood’ number one in the Christmas chart last week. As one of the most respected vocalists in Christian music, he has a busy schedule which includes regular appearances with BILL GAITHER’S HOMECOMING FRIENDS, and his work doesn’t even stop on Christmas day! He has several singing engagements listed on his website including Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Eve – what a trooper! Here’s where to catch him: 25th Dec Fort Myers, Florida 27th Jan Fort Myers, Florida 26th Dec Inverness, Florida 28th Jan St Petersburg, Florida 31st Dec Ft Lauderdale, Florida 29th Jan Orlando, Florida 21st Jan Tallahassee, Florida 30th Jan Naples, Florida 22nd Jan Jacksonville, Florida 6th Feb Cooper City, Florida 23rd Jan Frostproof, Florida For more information: www.larryford.com KRISSY NORDHOFF’s ‘It All Comes Down To Mercy’ has been number one on the NCM Euro chart for the past two weeks and you may be interested to hear how the song can about… Krissy says, “While in Costa Rica on a mission trip, I felt as though I was living simply to love other people. It was an awakening to how the Lord wants us to live and to what really matters to Him. When I returned home, I lost that feeling and felt distracted by this world. But I realized that the Lord knows my intentions and has mercy.” Krissy has been struggling with Lymes Disease for the past two years and has really come to rely on God and the support of her husband and family, so much so, her new album is called ‘Thank You’. For more information go to www.krissynordhoff.com MARK LOWRY and BUDDY GREENE must be delighted that their song ‘Mary Did You Know’ is getting so much attention. Last Sunday for the second year running, BBC SONGS OF PRAISE TV programme included the song in their carol programme, this year it was sung by HAYLEY WESTENRA. Last year’s AMERICAN IDOL runner up CLAY AIKEN performed the song twice on NBC once on the TONIGHT SHOW and again on the CLAY’S CHRISTMAS SPECIAL. TERRY HAZZARD and DAVE PRICE have their great version on the song on this month's NCMdisc. Please check out ONDEE's new website and she asks that you please sign her guestbook. She is a talent high in potential. She says, "This is so fun. Some of these Guestbook entries made me cry. I am so humbled, overwhelmed, and happy!" website: www.ondee.co/guestbood.php And finally… Over the past few weeks we have all taken part in a Christmas ritual that we’d rather not… What is it? Fiddling with the light bulbs on the Christmas tree! But have you ever wondered how everyone else changes their light bulbs…? How many Charismatics does it take to change a light bulb? One, since his/her hands are in the air anyway. How many Calvinists does it take to change a lightbulb? None. God has predestined when the lights will be on. How many Brethren does it take to change a light bulb? CHANGE?!!! How many Pentecostals does it take to change a light bulb? 10, one to change it and 9 others to pray against the spirit of darkness. How many TV Evangelists does it take to change a lightbulb? One. But for the message of hope to continue to go forth, send in your donation today. How many Roman Catholics does it take to change a lightbulb? None: Candles only. How many Amish does it take to change a lightbulb? What's a light bulb? How many polygamous Mormons does it take to change a lightbulb? Five. One man to change the bulb, and four wives to tell him how to do it. How many Jehovah's Witnesses does it take to change a light bulb? Three. One to screw in the bulb, and two to knock on your door and ask you if you've seen the light! How many Unitarians does it take to change a lightbulb? We choose not to make a statement either in favour of or against the need for a light bulb. However, in your own journey you have found that light bulbs work for you, that is fine. You are invited to write a poem or compose a modern dance about your light bulb for the next Sunday service, in which we will explore a number of light bulb traditions, including incandescent, fluorescent, three-way, long-life and tinted, all of which are equally valid paths to luminescence. A brand new feature 'Legal Watch' now takes place every Wednesday at 3.15pm on CROSS RHYTHMS. Featuring ANDREA WILLIAMS from the LAWYERS CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP the slot will inform listeners on some of the most challenging and significant changes in law looking to be introduced into the UK. Tune in on Sky Digital 876, or www.crossrhythms.co.uk or 101.8FM in North Staffs, to keep up to date on the changes taking place in things like prostitution, euthanasia, stem cell research and loads more. GODFREY & GILL BIRTILL have been in contact this week. Godfrey is a talented singer, songwriter from Lincoln. Eight live CDs have already been released by Godfrey and they are to record a new live CD at Lincoln New Life on Feb 15th 7.30pm. They ask for prayer for the period between 2nd January to 7th April 2005. Feeling in the Christmas spirit yet? Well if not, take the opportunity to be entertained and challenged at ‘Wow! Music trade magazine, 'MUSIC WEEK' reports that in contrast to last week's additions, this week's new tracks on the BBC RADIO TWO playlist distinctly lack any Christmas theme. Come on Radio Two we’ve got some Christmas songs you could use! Did you know? BACKSTREET BOYS’ BRIAN LITTERELL has just signed with REUNION RECORDS to record a gospel album. A born-again Christian since childhood, he says, “I hope to reach listeners in this arena and continue to let Backstreet Boys fans know that it’s ok to stand for what you believe in. If I can do something that opens doors and benefits in some way, I hope to be able to do that.” April will see Brian’s version of ‘In Christ Alone’ on the new ‘WOW’ compilation with a full album to follow later in the spring. We had happy news from Texas this week from JEFF CLARK of the MESSENGERS. He became a daddy for the first time to a little girl named, EMMA ANGELINE CLARK. It is provided by a company called Valtex. Valtex provide a complete web service for its clients, handling every aspect of the process. NCM commend Valtex accordingly. From the initial consultation, to the site specification, through to the ongoing issues and monitoring reports, Valtex have proved very dependable and competent. Established in 1997, Valtex are members of UKWDA (United Kingdom Web Designers Association). We had the latest newsletter from FEB (Fellowship of European Broadcasters) this week, who inform us that ERTS the Flemish Evangelical Radio and TV production group’s Broadcasting Licence will terminate at the end of this year. They are preparing an application to get broadcasting time for the next 5 years. Please pray. For more information about FEB, why not sign up for their newsletter at feb@feb.org. FEB also informs us that there is an exciting opportunity opening up in the Ukraine. The CBN Kiev Office have recently been able to obtain the very first FM licence for Christian radio in Ukraine. This wasn't planned, however, and so wasn't budgeted. Radio is NOT normally part of CBN's strategy, but this seemed like an opportunity not to be missed. So, they are appealing for help. They need both equipment and funds to launch the station. HCJB have already committed to make sure they have a good transmitter and signal. Fibre optic is available to take the station nationwide and onto the internet. It's a great opportunity. If you share a vision for radio in Ukraine, and would like further information, please contact STUART BENNETT directly. He will be able to supply you with a Business Plan and a Financial Plan. Stuart.Bennett@cbn.org A few weeks ago we told you that pop star WILL YOUNG is taking RAYMOND & CO on tour with him, and this week it was announced that DANIEL BEDINGFIELD is taking ONEHUNDREDHOURS on tour with him. STEVE HANCOCK (FURIOUS? RECORDS/FIERCE! Distribution) writes to NCM as follows: "Once again ROCKETOWN have released a compilation of some of the biggest names in Christian music. First released in 1998, 'Exodus' boasted a who's who of Christian music artists, including DC TALK, JARS OF CLAY, MICHAEL W. SMITH, SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER and THIRD DAY, among others. 'The Exodus of 2004' offers all the original recordings plus three new tracks from new artists NIRVA, TAYLOR SORENSEN and ROBBIE SEAY BAND". There has been great demand for this album, so much so that our first delivery was virtually sold out before it came to the stock room. When listening to this album I was immediately captured by its songs and their quality." He says, "It has been an amazingly encouraging couple of months...the youthwork conf was awesome, and the youthwork mag folks have swung round behind my album very very strongly too...mission in india was very fruitful too.... glad to be calm in Luton for a week!!! We've also sold nearly 1500 of my book in the first 3 weeks, so it seems to be we are scratching where people are itching!! Have you got something exciting going on at Christmas? Let us know what you are up to, and we’ll put your event in the NCM News! There has been outcry from Christian leaders and churches this week after MADAME TUSAUDS unveiled their nativity scene to the public. The scene has DAVID and VICTORIA BECKHAM as Mary and Joseph and HUGH GRANT, SAMUEL L JACKSON and GRAHAM NORTON as shepherds. The contemporary nativity scene also has KYLIE MINOGUE as an angel and GEORGE BUSH, DUKE of EDINBURGH and TONY BLAIR as ‘wise men’. From Southern California, FERNANDO ORTEGA writes, "This is terrific! I am forwarding your NCM email notices to my manager's office. Thanks again for sending me all this information. It's very exciting to know 'Noonday Devil' is getting played in so many different countries on so many different formats. I don't think it would ever happen like this in the US. Holy Mackerel!" Great to hear from you Fernando! Merseyside singer/songwriter CHRIS MERCER is now managed from the USA by TAME YOUR TONGUE PRODUCTIONS AND RECORDS, and her album , 'Whispers of His Grace', is to be released in the UK and USA in Feb 2005 and also released to itunes through a mainstream company in 2005... Don’t forget to catch up on what she’s up to on her new website www.chrismercer.net www.tameyourtongue.com ALAN GIBSON in Leeds tells NCM that he is very pleased that LARRY NORMAN CDs are finally available again in UK stores. The 'father of Christian Rock' released over 80 albums during his 45 years as a songwriter and performer - the latest being an album of rock/pop Christmas carols entitled 'Christmastime'. Unfortunately, Larry is currently in poor health after a heart by pass operation in 2001. The Official UK website has recently been set up to promote Larry's medical needs and to make his CDs available again in the UK. www.larrynorman.uk.com Did you hear the one about kindergarten teacher who asked her class to bring in something that represented their religion to a "show and tell"…? Well, if a new law is passed in the coming months you may never find out! The British Government is debating a new law in Parliament, banning ‘incitement to religious hatred’, and it has stirred comedian ROWAN ATKINSON to speak up. The actor who is most famous for his roles as MR BEAN and BLACKADDER says that the new law would infringe people’s right to free speech, including the right to tell religious jokes in case they offend. This means that sketches such as ‘Mr Bean Goes To Church’, ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ and so on could be deemed unlawful – in the extreme punished with a 7 year jail sentence. Rowan says, “The right to offend is more important than the right not to be offended. Freedom of expression must be protected for artists and entertainers and we must not accept a bar on the lampooning of religion and religious leaders. There is an obvious difference between the behaviour of racist agitators who can be prosecuted under existing laws, and the activities of satirists and writers who may choose to make a comedy or criticism of religious belief, practices or leaders just as they do with politics”. A Home Office official said “There is a clear difference between criticism of a religion and the act of inciting hatred against members of a religious group.” P.S if you want to hear the rest of the joke - while we’re still allowed to write it - keep reading! Following the highly successful World Service Tour in the UK, DELIRIOUS? will be embarking on a five date tour in Germany. Delirious? have had great radio success in Germany as have the singles that they have released there. According to RALF SCHROETER, head of J STAR - the label currently enjoying widespread mainstream success with the band throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland - the past year has been remarkable: 'Inside Outside' has become an institution over there!" He says. "It's been all over the radio since January, spending 12 weeks in the top 20 and still it's a big hit. Then there's 'World Service' - we released a special silver edition of the album at the end of October, as well as 'Rain Down', the next single." One of the keys to the band's warm welcome has been the support of SWR3 (radio station). Ralf's interpretation of their role is clear: "No Christian band has ever had the support of SWR3 and they simply fell in love with Delirious?. With 1.7 million listeners per hour it's not long before everyone else gets round to feeling the same about the band.” Here’s where to catch them in Germany: 14th December Munchen Venue: Backstage 15th December Stuttgart Venue: Longhorn 16th December Koln Venue: Live Music Hall 17th December Mainz Venue: Frankfurter Hof Ticket Hotline: +49 (0) 1805 57 00 00 www.prknet.de steve@fiercedistribution.com or +44 (1243) 558444 From Eire, DARAGH KENNEDY (Manager of JOSEPH) writes, "It sure looks like the Christian world is keeping busy. On behalf of Joseph and myself can we wish you all at NCM a peaceful Christmas and Blessed New Year. Latest on Joseph is that he is recording some new material that we are hoping to be ready by Easter. God is leading him towards a Gospel Worship album that should minister to believers through the story of his own life experience. Stand with us in prayer if you would as Joseph is writing the new material with another talented artist." Looking forward to hearing the new album! JENNY COLLINS at KINGSWAY MUSIC says that the 'Kisses From Heaven' album is a heartfelt offering of worship to God from three very gifted vocalists - multi-DOVE AWARD winning and GRAMMY AWARD nominees, MICHELLE TUMES, SUSAN ASHTON and CHRISTINE DENTE. There are new versions of ‘In Christ Alone’, ‘Jesus Christ (Once Again)’, ‘Here I Am To Worship’ and others. Between them Michelle, Susan and Christine have sold in excess of 4 million albums worldwide. www.kingsway.co.uk ANDY RIGBY informs us that www.christianbits.co.uk is a UK online shopping site offering over 31000 Christian products at discount prices. As well as the big names (SOUL SURVIVOR, HILLSONG, DELIRIOUS? etc), they specialise in offering CDs from artists that are not distributed through the mainstream record labels - current favourites include MAX, NAMELESSMUSIC, plus gospel artists EBI MENSAH, THEA WRAY and more. From Texas, TOMMY CLARK of the MESSENGERS says that he feels that they are reaching the world with the Good News of Christ via NCM. "We appreciate receiving the comments and feedback regarding our music. Our first single with NCM, "My Saviour Paid It All", reached #1 and is still on the chart. Our second single, "God Knows", debuted on the chart @ #4. Both songs are from The Messengers CD project entitled 'Children of Light'. When we perform our vocals, we prefer live picking vs. pre-recorded tracks. It is our hope that someday God will open the door for us to perform in Europe. Thanks to your wonderful NCM service, and God willing, that may become a reality some day. Many Blessings and have a great Christmas!" CLINT MILLER tells NCM that TOMPALL GLASER's new gospel album is something that DJs will love. Clint says that Tompall is scheduling some NCM single releases in the New Year. And finally… So what did the kids bring in to ‘Show and Tell’ that represented their religion? The first boy got in front of the class and said, "My name is Benjamin and I am Jewish and this is the Star of David." The second boy got in front of the class and said, "My name is Mary. I'm a Catholic and this is the Crucifix." The third boy got in front of the class and said, “My name is Tommy and I am Baptist and this is a casserole." The film called ‘SAVED!’ features singer/actress MANDY MOORE as a student at a Baptist School. The movie covers topics such as teenage pregnancy, homosexuality, peer pressure, evangelism and judgement. Some Christians have called the movie ‘hateful’ whereas others have said that the film is a useful tool to show how others perceive Christianity. The producer, REM’s MICHAEL STIPE says the movie is ‘absolutely audacious’. Several Christian songs are featured on the soundtrack. The interestingly named NOTE FOR A CHILD is taking NCM#15 by storm. The duo made up of Susie Beattie and Daniel Goodman were an unlikely pair to get together geographically. Susie is a GP born in Dartmoor and studying in Cambridge and Bristol. Whereas Daniel spent his youth ‘toes tickling the water as the hot sun beat down’ over in Guniea Bissau, West Africa. It seemed never-the-twain-shall-meet, but one day Susie hired a graphics designer to work on some CDs she had made and who should turn up but Daniel. Before long the pair had struck up a successful partnership which saw their debut album release 12 months ago. Since then there have been appearances at SPRING HARVEST, NEW WINE, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 4 and GLASTONBURY. For more information go to www.noteforachild.com Probably the most prominent Christian music media company in the UK, CROSS RHYTHMS is appealing for help over the coming months. The company has a radio channel on SKY DIGITAL, but unless it receives enough funds before 4th Dec the channel will be lost. Their email newsletter says “We believe God has shown us that He has ‘blown all the leaves off our tree, but the life for the future is in the tree.’ We believe God has shown us that ‘He will bring us the point of death, but we will not die’. Cross Rhythms is appealing for financial support at this time of vulnerability even in the form of one-off donations. To make a donation go to www.crossrhythms.co.uk/friends/friend-donate.shtml Keeping with CROSS RHYTHMS, on 23rd November they applied for a licence for their station in Stoke-on-Trent. The licence will allow them to broadcast Christian music and ministry on CROSS RHYTHMS CITY RADIO for the next 5 years. From bonnie Scotland, JEAN LAFFERTY writes, "Thanks for the NCM discs. They are enjoyed by many (a potential listening audience of 30,000 on the Sunday morning Breakfast show from 8-10 on NEVIS RADIO our local community frequency. We thank and praise the Lord for the opportunity and wonderful privilege of being able to go live on air each week in the morning. Also in the evening we have another two hour slot from 8-10 that is purely Gospel and again we use the NCM CDs. Keep up the good work as we look forward to the New Year and many more singers songwriters coming forward. How we thank the Lord for LARRY NORMAN who blazed the way for "new" styles of Christian music, and stuck at it until the breakthro came, Hallelujah. Blessings on all he does today...and so say all of us eh!" NEWDAY is a new event initiated by NEWFRONTIERS which was held in the Newark showground last summer. Over 3000 youth gathered together for days filled with worship, teaching and reaching-out to the people of Nottingham. This album includes the songs led by PAUL OAKLEY, MATT REDMAN & SIMON BRADING. Highlights from late night events with YFRIDAY and PHATFISH are also included. spaculabo@kingsway.co.uk From Florida, JOHN STALLINGS says, "I'm thrilled to see our tune 'Take a Look' being played on the radio stations. We're excited about releasing "Blessin after Blessin" on your next CD. Interestingly, for a long time, every time we sang 'Take a Look' someone would say it sounded like a JOHNNY CASH song so we tried unsuccessfully to get it to Cash. That never happened but I feel sure Johnny would have had a smash with the song. I'm nonetheless happy and humbled to see our version getting airplay. Please let the folk know they can check out our web sites. Keep up the good work." Great to hear from you John! www.JohnStallings.com www.LearningtoLeanMinistries.com TOM TRAVIS writes, "I was sitting listening to WHISPERING BOB HARRIS' show on BBC RADIO 2 last night and what do you know? He played my NCM song, 'Hey, Who Said You Can't Go Home?' Wow! What with NCM and Bob, I'm getting the biggest audiences of my long music career. I'm sure none of it would have happened without NCM. Thanks for all your work and God bless!" Fantastic news Tom! We are only weeks away from 2005 now and it is going to be a busy one for CATHERINE BROWN of GATEKEEPERS PRAYER AND MISSION. The organisation is coordinating an initiative called ‘THE MILLION HOURS OF PRAISE’. Catherine says, “God has given me a vision to mobilise the church and the nations of the earth to worship Jesus for one million hours, and we at million hours of praise believe that this worship will carry on past many millions of hours. You may ask why? Because Jesus is worth it!” Joining in with the campaign is worship leader NOEL RICHARDS who is hosting a concert at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin on 25th June. Individuals and churches are asked to go to the website and log the number of hours of praise that they are participating in. Catherine says, “We want to believe there will be a symphony of praise that will resonate throughout the earth, in every nation, across every continent - that every tribe and creed and colour would come and worship Jesus.” To get involved go to www.millionhoursofpraise.com DAVID BEGG manager of HOLIER THAN THOU RECORDS in Stratford upon Avon is looking for rock metal Christian music similar to POD / Creed to release through www.HolierThanThouRecords.com If you are interested email David on HTTrecords@aol.com JAMIE HILL was surprised to see his track ‘Lord I Receive Your Love’ at number 3 AND number 46 on the NCM Euro Chart this week! Of course number 46 was in fact Jamie’s other NCM track ‘Creator God’ from NCM#12. Sorry for the slip up Jamie! Jamie is well respected as the frontman of QUENCH but this year released a solo praise and worship album entitled ‘One Day’. He has led worship at NEW WINE and SPRING HARVEST as well as at his home church in Cheltenham. THE MIGHTY CLOUDS OF JOY are celebrating their 45th anniversary of singing great gospel music! The group are recorded a live album over in Houston Texas this week during a concert at the Fountain of Praise Hillcroft Worship Centre. The band has clocked up a whopping 35+ albums over the past 45 years and is still going strong. Please convey to all your people our sincere thanks for the great music throughout this year. Please mention that ALL NCM tracks are playing on our network of now 13 stations. We play gospel only from midnight Saturday night to 6pm Sunday nights. Many of your artists are sending material to us too. We are now playing Country Music Box from Martin McKenzie in the UK. This is played just after midnight and again at 12 noon. Our Sunday gospel programme is also taken and relayed by 4 other stations so the great NCM music is really being exposed. To you and all your wonderful helpers seasons greetings, peace and happiness and we look forward to a great association in 2005." Merry Christmas you too Dave! The debut trad-jazz gospel album by ROD WATTS & MIKE BRETT entitled 'Homemade Jazz Hymns: Make a Joyful Noise' on the ICC record label two years ago received good reception from many BBC radio stations and stations in Australia, USA, New Zealand and Singapore. The band have decided to keep together into 2005 so they can say goodbye to their fans. Their fans are making headlines of their own by starting a petition to get some of their previously unheard recordings released. The campaign began after the band’s ETHAN LUCK let it slip on the band’s message board that he had several demos, informal recordings and unreleased material. Since then the fans have been signing a petition which will go to the band’s record company ‘BEC / Tooth and Nail asking them to release the material on a new album. Bob Dixon of Revival Radio (www.revivalradio.org.uk) says that Revival Radio will return to the airwaves on 30th January 2005 for its latest 28-day RSL broadcast (their 14th). Revival Radio has just completed the process of making application under the UK's new Community Radio licensing scheme and, if successful, could become the first full-time Christian radio station to broadcast from Scottish soil, with a projected on-air date of around June 2005. And finally… A true story from DAILY MAIL’s ‘Out of the mouths of babes’ column. “Sam, four, has been learning about God answering our prayers. His mum Louise was rushing to exit the car park before it closed. After searching for her ticket to no avail, Louise pressed the help button at the car park gate. From the speaker, a friendly voice assured: “It’s OK, it’s Sunday – no charge.” Louise mumbled “Thank you Lord.” An amazed Sam said, “Mum, was that really Him?” NCM EURO COUNTRY GOSPEL CHART (w/e 3rd December 2004) 1.Steve Zuwala-Between You and Me 2.Dianne Ticknor-The Best Is Yet To Come 3.Addison Hayes-You Sing To Me 4.Clint Miller-The Lord Is My Rock 5.John Stallings-Take A Look 6.Larry Ford-This Is How It Feels To Be Free 7.The Messengers-God Knows 8.Vernon Oxford-No One Is Listening 9.Tom Travis-The Darkest Hour 10.Tim McGraw-Live Like You Were Dying 11.Steve Zuwala-Next In Line 12.Clint Miller-Love And Family Pride 13..Holly Williams-How Can you Refuse Him Now? 14.Bernie Underwood-Someone Loves You 15.Wes Davis & George Hamilton IV-You Laid Aside Your Majesty 16.Ed Mikrut-Fruit Of Your Labour 17.Tom Travis & Bluegrass Incident-Hey, Who Said You Can't Go Home 18.Clint Miller-I Had A Dream 19.Jesse McReynolds & Virginia Boys-America On Bended Knees 20.Bud Tutmarc-Amazing Grace 21.Cliff Barrows-The Touch Of The Master’s Hand 22.Wes Davis & Jerry Arhelger-Faith, Hope And Love 23.The Messengers–My Saviour Paid It All 24.Larry Ford–No More 25.Linda Hargrove–God Bless The Wine 26.AG & Kate-Learning to Smile 27.Clint Miller–Kneeling Drunkard’s Prayer 28.Praise Street Worship Band-Cross Of Gold 29.Jess Owen–Lord Help Me Over This Mountain 30.George Hamilton IV - Streets Of London NCM News 64 19th November 2004 NCM Euro Chart (w/e 19th November 2004) 1.Newsboys-Name Above All Names 2.Clint Miller-The Lord Is My Rock 3.Dianne Ticknor-The Best Is yet To Come 4.Tom Travis-The Darkest Hour 5.Steve Zuwala-Between You and Me 6.Jamie Hill-Lord I Receive Your Love 7.Toby Mac-Gone 8.Garth Hewitt-Indifferent To The Pain 9.John Stallings-Take A Look 10.Iona-The Island 11.Vernon Oxford-No One Is Listening 12.Addison Hayes-You Sing To Me 13.Nik & Emma Pears-Bless The Lord 14.Natalie Grant-Days Like These 15.Charles Timberlake & John Daniels-Let Me be Yours 16.Fernando Ortega-Noonday Devil 17.Larry Ford-This Is How It Feels To Be Free 18.The Messengers-God Knows 19.Nameless Music-Lord of My Life 20.Rock Brothers-Follow The Sun 21.Spring Harvest-How Deep The Father’s Love 22.Wes Davis & George Hamilton IV-You Laid Aside Your Majesty 23.Bernie Underwood-Someone Loves You 24.Chris Stone-Following The Light 25.Offerings-Angels With Us 26.Steve Zuwala-Next In Line 27.Steve Parsons-I’m OK 28.Tim McGraw-Live Like You Were Dying 29.Chris Tomlin-Indescribable 30.Lee Ryan-Why Me 32.Eoghan Heaslip-Kings Of The Ages 33.Andy Flannagan-Stop 33.Jason Morant-I Love You Lord 34.Rock Brothers-For Heaven’s Sake 35.Dave Rowley-Father Your Will Be Done 36.Kierra ‘Kiki’ Sheard-You Don’t Know 37.Holly Williams-How Can you Refuse Him Now? 38.Brian Houston-Before The Sun 39.Nikki Carless-Bright Future 40.Clint Miller-Love And Family Pride 41.Helen Shapiro & Cliff Richard-We Being Many 42.Jesse McReynolds & Virginia Boys-America On Bended Knees 43.Shawn McDonald-Gravity 44.Bud Tutmarc-Amazing Grace 45.Ian Eskelin-Taboo 46.Praise Street–Jesus, You’re The Joy Of Living 47.Cliff Barrows-The Touch Of The Master’s Hand 48.Garth Hewitt & Jessy Dixon-The Feast Of Life 49.Ed Mikrut-Fruit Of Your Labour 50.Wes Davis & Jerry Arhelger-Faith, Hope And Love 51.The Messengers–My Saviour Paid It All 52.Moya Brennan–Bright Star 53.Chris Rice–Smellin’ Coffee 54.Larry Ford–No More 55.Liberation Suite–O Lord You Know 56.Linda Hargrove–God Bless The Wine 57.Starfield-Filled With Your Glory 58.AG & Kate-Learning to Smile 59.Tom Travis & Bluegrass Incident-Hey, Who Said You Can’t Go Home 60.Plumb-Sink N’ Swim Coming soon- NCM#15 (includes Christmas songs)! Stella debuted her new song, "Tell It Sister Tell It" on the 10TH ANNUAL CHRISTIAN COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville which aired live on the GAC Network. Stella’s song brought people to the stage in response to its message. Stella was also honoured as the Christian Country Music Association's '2004 Female Vocalist of the Year'. When asked about the award, Stella commented, "I was so surprised and honoured to be presented this prestigious award and want to thank all those who complimented me with their vote and support." Although Stella has received many awards throughout her career, this one was particularly special as it recognised not only her music but her deep and abiding faith. Congratulations Stella! www.stellaparton.com We received an excited message from NCM’s core supporter CLINT MILLER after his song ‘The Lord Is My Rock’ hit the number one spot in the country music chart! He writes, “Wow....It is soooooo good to see a scripture song 'number one'! Lots of love to NCM! Clint.” Well deserved Clint. Great news for VEGGIE TALE fans, there is a new one out soon! ‘Duke and the Great Pie War’, is the 25th Veggie Tale, and is based on the story of RUTH and NAOMI. The story takes place against the backdrop of a dangerous (and messy!), Great Pie War taking place between the Kingdom of Scone and the armies of Rhubarb, where Sweet Petunia has to flee her homeland to protect her mother-in-law. Just in time for Christmas, a new newspaper has arrived on the shelves. Called ‘Son’, it is a 12 page Christian newspaper, the first to be published in the UK. The first edition has an interview with recently converted, former BOYZONE member ,SHANE LYNCH. Ex police officer, lNCM's BEN FORDE from Northern Ireland reports that his health continues to get better and that he is very much back on the road witnessing in word-and-song. For the first time in his 42 year solo singing career he now has the company and support of several musicians. This new image is called BEN FORDE & FRIENDS. He says, "Last Friday night we had an evening of Praise at West Church, Bangor. A total of 12 musicians, consisting of 3 accordions, harmonica, piano, violin, bass, organ and guitarist. One of these having experienced playing lead guitar with VAN MORRISON/THE EAGLES etc. He has put the world stage to one side and his desire is to play Gospel Music. As a group we have been greatly aware of God blessing and to all who hear us. That night we also had our men's fellowship choir of approx., 100 men sing to God's glory. What a sound it was to hear them sing 'Will Your Anchor Hold in the Storms Of Life’ accompanied by the band. What a most blessed night we had. The proceeds raised we were able to contribute towards Church funds. I also enjoy the humours and challenging pieces at the end of the NCM NEWS. I have made use of them when out and about." Sounds as though Ben is busy spreading the Word, Praise God! To contact Ben email benforde@drumcreehouse.freeserve.co.uk 'Barbary Coast' pianist, Barrie Fletcher says that he hears that JERRY ARHELGER (in Tennessee) is well and is planning to come over to the UK in July 2005. That's good news for Jerry's many friends. With 1.7 million listeners per hour it's not long before everyone else gets round to feeling the same about the band.” Here’s where to catch them in Germany: 14th December Munchen Venue: Backstage 15th December Stuttgart Venue: Longhorn 16th December Koln Venue: Live Music Hall 17th December Mainz Venue: Frankfurter Hof Ticket Hotline: +49 (0) 1805 57 00 00 www.prknet.de steve@fiercedistribution.com or +44 (1243) 558444 ‘What Is The Chance Of That” is a new song by AMY GRANT and will make its debut via the iTunes website this week. ICC Studios has been undergoing major changes since NEIL COSTELLO came onboard as Studio Manager in September 2003. The new staff are very experienced, an enthusiastic engineering team. However the big news is that over recent weeks, main studio, Studio 1, has been massively overhauled. This has included a new solid wood oak floor, a brand new acoustically treated back wall with bespoke ‘Sound Traps’ (designed by Recording Architecture), general redecoration, a new dual processor Apple G5 with 20” widescreen monitor and a fully professional rewire but most importantly a completely new desk. 01323 726134. www.iccstudios.co.uk. Merseyside Singer, Chris Mercer is at present in Scotland putting the final touches to her new album ‘Whispers of His Grace’ to be released in the UK and USA from Feb 2005. Looking forward to it debuting on NCM, Chris. RAYMOND & CO have had an excellent year so far and it is set to finish with a big climax. The band were approached by the management of pop-star WILL YOUNG, saying that Will had personally requested they be asked to come and tour with him during his 19 date arena tour. Will Young was the first and by far the most successful POP IDOL winner. The runner-up in the competition was Christian GARETH GATES, who in previous interviews has said that Mr Young has been attending an Alpha course with him. Having taken the number one spot already this year, Will Young will be clinching the coveted Christmas number one spot as part of BAND AID’s release of ‘Do They Know It's Christmas'. Raymond & Co had been praying that an opportunity to tour would avail itself when they were approached by Young’s management! They said they are, “…grateful to God for the opportunity to share the gospel message of Jesus to a wider audience!” The tour begins in Manchester on 25th November and will perform to approximately 163,000! Last week we told you about the numerous babies who arrived into the Christian music world last week. Well, congratulations to those who spotted that new fathers MIKE SCHEUCHZER and BART MILLARD are – of course - from MERCYME not THRID DAY! NCM#15 is already causing a stir and it isn’t even out yet! Here’s a note from NEVIS RADIO’s JEAN LAFFERTY, “Thanks for the NCM music it’s a great boon on Nevis Radio. What a surprise to read that LARRY NORMAN is coming soon!!! Wow, he is the favourite of many, as we remind them of his bold and very very great stand for Christian music, L O N G ago...he was the very fellow who brought refreshing into our home and started a revival, Hallelujah.” Only a few more weeks to wait Jean! In Birmingham tonight, FRUITS (HMD), SQUAUD BENEFEC’TOR, ENDURE, ESSENCE, REDEEMED, SANJAE and GAP D are set to perform. The event kicks off at 7pm at St George College, Newtown, Birmingham. For more information call 07957 234061 or go to www.digospel.co.uk/na Did you know? Over in the Bahamas, they have just held the 10th Annual beauty pageant called MISS GOSPEL BAHAMAS. Eight Christian ladies between 18-25 took part in the evangelical pageant organised by GREAT COMMISSION MINISTRIES INTERNATIONAL. The audience of hundreds of youth and family members saw the 8 contestants dress as Biblical characters for one section of the pageant and minister to the audience through dance, song, comedy and drama in the ‘talent section’. Special guests included CHRISTIAN MASSIVE, DYNAMITE DAISY and LYNN TEREZ DAVIS, and the final award was presented by the deputy Prime Minister! The title of Miss Gospel Bahamas was won by ANDRA SUTHERLAND. Disappointing news from BIG DISMAL, who have announced that they have spilt up. The debate as to whether the band were still together has been raging for some time, with some band members saying it was all over, and others saying they had just recorded new material and were about to release another album. Then rumours emerged saying that members had quit, which were followed by angry shouts of “No I haven’t quit!”, and so on… Finally the chat-room of their website confirmed that the band was no more. “I guess I should say something since I am the one who started this band in the first place.” Said band’s songwriter ERIC DURRANCE, “No one can begin to imagine what the guys and myself have been through. It has been a very slow death for this band and there are a lot of people (who I won't mention) who pulled the trigger in the end. So I will tell you all (YES) Big D has ended. I myself will go ahead with my career (alone). I tried everything possible to try and hold this together but it soon would have driven me six feet under. Things will move much faster now without all the drama! I hope you will continue to support me and the songs. You will notice that the songs will remain great even though the band was weak.” No spoonful of sugar with that medicine there then! He continued, “Well, I hope you all understand what a great relief this is for me and my family. Now I can make the music the way I want without having to ask anyone for an opinion. To all the members of Big D- Jeff, Davy, Stan, Gary, Chuck, Terry, I say thank you for helping the music get this far. Now it’s up to me. Your friend, Eric" Although there hasn’t been a firm reason given for the break-up, the pages of quite nasty bickering from members of the band past and present on their website seem to site family pressures, wanting more of the limelight, wanting to do their own thing and taking their focus off Jesus. As yet the band’s website has no official word about the break-up, all the information has come from their chat room, but to keep up with events go to www.bigdismal.com. The bottom line being that it has all ended in a ‘Dismal mess’. Regular readers of NCM News will be pleased to hear that ERNIE ASHWORTH’s wife BETTYE is continuing to get better – Praise God! We had this note from NCM friend MARTY MARTEL, “I just spoke with Ernie Ashworth, and he asked me if I would like to speak with Bettye, who is still recuperating. It was really good to talk with her, and her spirits were high and she is doing much better. Ernie has been by her side through all of her illness. He is a good man, and they are both such beautiful people. Please keep her on your prayer lines. Thanks.” And finally… A preacher was completing a temperance sermon: with great expression he said, "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." With even greater emphasis he said, "And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." And then finally, he said, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." His sermon over, he sat down. The song leader then stood very cautiously and announced with a smile, "For our closing song, let us sing Hymn # 365: "Shall We Gather at the River." THIRD DAY had a bumper month with two of the guys becoming dads. First a little boy named Benjamin was born on 22nd October to MIKE SCHEUCHZER and his wife ABBY. Then on the 4th November fellow band member BART MILLARD and wife SHANNON welcomed baby GRACIE into their family. But the new arrivals didn’t stop there… TOBYMAC became a daddy again on Saturday for the fourth time to a little boy called LEO. Leo came 5 weeks early but both mummy and baby are doing well. But wait! Another family was created this week as REGGIE and LADYE LOVE SMITH had their adoption of little BRETT REECE CLAIBORNE SMITH finalised in court. Congratulations!! Singer RUSS LEE is off to Iraq this week to work among the US Army’s 101st Airbourne Division. He is hoping to perform in concert all around the country including Baghdad. Keep him in your prayers. SALLY BLUNDELL says, "After the success of the previous two years SOUL SURVIVOR albums 'Glimpses of Glory' and 'Anthem of the Free', this year's live album has a lot to live up to! ’Living Loud' features worship led by TIM HUGHES, ONE HUNDREDHOURS, MARK BESWICK, LEX BRODIE and HILLSONG UNITED. A characteristic of last year’s Soulinthecity was the coming together of the black and white sound in worship, and as MIKE PILAVACHI says, ‘the result is music that moves from monochrome to full colour'. This album also includes CD-rom footage from the fantastic Soulinthecity celebration in Trafalgar Square, where over 15,000 people gathered to worship, plus a report on the two weeks mission to London. They ask that we “pray for lasting fruit.” CLAUDETTE dropped us a note this week thankful for NCM's promotion and airplay. She says, "How great it is to get these regular NCM updates." Claudette’s album “Hardest of Times” is the Gospel Album of the Month (November 04) in Premier Magazine. And well deserved too! An ideal Christmas present for someone?....For the living room, the waiting room, the school, the church, and the library… for the bus, train and plane… SONGS OF REDEMPTION (Book with CD) by PAUL DAVIS is an interesting, devotional souvenir book that is perfect for the pastor, preacher, teacher, student, layperson, music-fan, the Christian reader and the casual reader. The book comes with a CD of the songs in the book. Enormously inspiring and admired, all the way through the Twentieth Century, these sacred Pentecostal ‘Songs Of Redemption’ were extensively sung-in-churches, recorded, broadcast and published in hymnals. They are foundational to the modern charismatic hymns and contemporary choruses that followed them. The heart-warming stories behind the songwriters and their songs-and-theology paint a fascinating backdrop to their centre-stage dramas. Each inspirational song-story is accompanied by fitting NKJV Bible texts and all songs, scriptures and song-writers are scheduled in alphabetical order. (available in Christian bookshops (Authentic Media/STL Distribution) or via www.pauldavisauthor.com) With Christmas fast approaching 18th December 2004 has been set for the DELIRIOUS? One day the man returned home to discover his sister had been taken. With no thought for his own life, the man charged down to the Headquarters and demanded his sister was released. Laughing the soldier behind the desk said, “OK, I’ll release your sister… As soon as you grow hairs on the palm of your hand!” To the soldier’s disbelief, the Jewish man unfurled his fist onto the desk to display a patch of curly, black hair growing on his palm… Years before, the man had had an accident and the doctors had grafted a section on skin from another part of his body onto the palm of his hand… God’s planning years before bought that young woman her freedom that day. CHARLES TIMBERLAKE’s beautiful compositions have been pleasing many listeners on the NCMdiscs. Charles started playing the piano at the age of 6, and later began to compose. After reading Law at university, he began teaching and in 1986 he gave his heart to the Lord. His musical ministry has taken him across the country and seen his music appear on BBC’s ‘This Is The Day’ as well as on many radio stations. Since 2000 he has worked with JOHN DANIELS (who’s worked with CLIFF RICHARD, GRAHAM KENDRICK, DANA and SHEILA WALSH) and together they have recorded several albums, including ‘If You Lead Me’ which was released this year. For more information go to www.charlestimberlake.co.uk If you’ve been to a wedding reception you are bound to have danced to one of their songs, but which Disco group have recorded a gospel album? SISTER SLEDGE! The quartet started singing as children in their home church in Philadelphia, before going global with hits like ‘We Are Family’, ‘Frankie’ and ‘Lost In Music’. Lately the band has slimmed down to a duo with just DEBBIE and JONI remaining. The album is due for release next year. On England's south-west coast, gales and storms battered the sea and the land. But in the last week of October, an enthused and inspired house-party at HALDON COURT in Exmouth, Devon enjoyed the ministry in word-and-song of USA born, singer-songwriter STEVE HUGHES and his Ulster-born wife, classical pianist CONNIE HUGHES. Highly motivated and talented, the duo are names to watch and well worth considering for a church booking. Steve pastors the Church of the Nazarene in Lurgan, County Armagh, Northern Ireland and this week is preaching in Paris, France. Revstevehughes@aol.com Following the highly successful World Service Tour in the UK, DELIRIOUS? will be embarking on a five date tour in Germany. Delirious? have had great radio success in Germany as have the singles that they have released there. According to RALF SCHROETER, head of J STAR - the label currently enjoying widespread mainstream success with the band throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland - the past year has been remarkable: 'Inside Outside' has become an institution over there," he says. With 1.7 million listeners per hour it's not long before everyone else gets round to feeling the same about the band.” Here’s where to catch them in Germany: 14th December Munchen Venue: Backstage 15th December Stuttgart Venue: Longhorn 16th December Koln Venue: Live Music Hall 17th December Mainz Venue: Frankfurter Hof Ticket Hotline: +49 (0) 1805 57 00 00 www.prknet.de steve@fiercedistribution.com or +44 (1243) 558444 We had a great note from DJ KEV JOHNS this week, he writes, “I've just listened to Vol. 14 whilst prepping for tomorrow Breakfast Show. Great selection this month. I'll be recording Heart and Soul for Valleys Radio in the morning so the disc couldn't have come at a better time. The tracks that I've listed will be played on the Valleys Show which I'd pre-recorded and for Swansea Sound's Heart and Soul which is a live show. Great Raja figures for the show on both stations and thanks for your continued support!” Glad the CD’s are well received Kev! The build-up has been substantial and now the climax is here! It is only available on the internet via www.joshdoyle.com and if you get in fast there is discounted ‘early birds’ offer for the first two weeks. In addition to the album you can also listen to exclusive downloads, including demos and Dum Dums material. The band is now on the road taking a concert to 28 US cities. JOSEPH D’SOUZA was present at one of these concerts recently in Houston, 2500 had packed into the auditorium. He writes “People in the audience were visibly moved by the multimedia presentation of their new songs. The impact is huge as the songs are sung and the images flick in the background of Dalits hearing the Gospel, Dalit children in school, Dalit poverty and Dalit aspiration for spiritual freedom.” At the end of the concert a large number of people swarmed to the Dalit Freedom Network booth and hundreds of people signed up to pray, to get involved, to go and to give. Please pray that more US Christians, and indeed Christians around the world, will get involved in the Dalit movement and many churches will know renewal through their involvement." For more information go to: www.idsn.org The opener on NCM14 is a stirring track from NATALIE GRANT called ‘Days Like These’. The young songstress from Seattle, is passionate that her music will talk to the listeners in a non-preaching way, she says “I don’t want to just give people religion or some clever method of how to achieve personal peace. I don’t want to preach a list of ‘dos and don’ts’. I want to love and respect my audience, and live my life in such a way that people will want what I have – a life changing and vital relationship with Jesus.” For more information about Natalie go to www.nataliegrant.com Various Christian bands have been busy over the past months in the run up to the US elections joining the ‘Redeem The Vote’ campaign. The non-party campaign targeted Christians, encouraging them to vote and get the Christian viewpoint heard. One of the bands in the scheme was POINT OF GRACE, who used a promotional appearance in New York for their new album, to talk about the campaign. Last week we told you how NCM’s Executive Director PAUL DAVIS had a university Fellowship conferred on him to recognise his work in gospel music, well singer LYNN BECKMAN in the USA wrote to congratulate him saying, “I add my congratulations to the many you have surely received. Your good work with Gospel music is truly worthy of recognition and honour. I am happy the folks at the EUROPEAN THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY noticed what those of us who have been looking from across the world recognize as well. Keep up the good work. And, especially, thanks for your support of and interest in my music. May God continue to be glorified through it all.” NCM’s LYNN BECKMAN's newest CD, "Castles & Crowns" is now available world wide on the internet through CDBaby.com out of Portland, Oregon. Anyone can preview any or all of the songs on any of his albums through the web site. The new CD contains 15 songs, pay attention to "He Is Risen". It is something quite different than any that he has ever done before--a full big band---orchestra-- sound and arrangement. The man who arranged the Easter song arranges the string sections for one of the large US philharmonic orchestras. The front cover of the new CD is a photo of Lynn on stage in Nashville on WSM Radio with Billy Walker. www.cdbaby.com/lbeckman or call US 301-387-9275. Last month’s opening artist CHRIS TOMLIN is well known for writing such wonderful songs as "Forever", "We Fall Down", “The Wonderful Cross", "Famous One" and other anthems sung by millions of people each week in churches around the world. The great news is that he received his first No. 1 radio hit with "Indescribable" recently! The song is also riding high at No. 6 on Billboard AC chart. Producer Ed Cash calls the song "one of the best songs I've ever heard." In addition to all the singing he has been doing Chris has also been writing a book – ‘The Way I Was Made’.www.christomlin.com Did you know…? You can now work-out to Christian Music in the form of a new DVD from DONNA RICHARDSON. It’s name? ‘Sweating In The Spirit’ One of the songs that really hit home with many on last month’s NCM#13 was TIM MCGRAW’s ‘Live Like You Were Dying’. The song remained at number one for four weeks on the NCM Euro charts. For those unfamiliar with the track, it tells the story of a man who is told he is dying and of the new ‘lease of life’ that this realisation gives him. He goes fishing, sky-diving, rodeo riding, gets his relationships right with his God and family so on. Well now there is a book based on the song, written by MICHAEL MORRIS. Using the same storyline, the book will be based on a high-flying executive who is told he has terminal cancer. WestBow Press, who are publishing the book say, “It’s a story about how to live a better life, how to live a life worth living.” Fierce! is now distributing a new compilation album entitled 'GLORIA', featuring MICHAEL W. SMITH, AMY GRANT & CHARLIE PEACOCK. The Christmas collection combines traditional music in new settings with several original songs. ‘Gloria’ addresses the anticipation that is part and parcel of the Christmas season: waiting for the birth of the Saviour 2000 years ago and waiting today for His glorious return. The music of Gloria envelops the light and darkness of walking in expectation as songs range from the haunting but hopeful notes of "Prepare a Place" to the joyous summation of "Go Tell It on the Mountain." With writing and performance contributions from Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Charlie Peacock, WAYNE KIRKPATRICK, CINDY MORGAN, GINNY OWENS, WATERMARK and more. For more information contact steve@fiercedistribution.com The INTERNATIONAL GOSPEL MUSIC HALL OF FAME, has a new member in the form of REVEREND MILTON BIGGHAM. Rev Biggham has been hugely influential in gospel music picking up various awards including GRAMMYS and STELLA. His influence has been felt through his songs, recordings and productions and more widely as he was the man who ‘discovered’ KIRK FRANKLIN and DONNY McCLURKIN. Congratulations Milton. NCM’s PLUMB is revelling in her pregnancy. She says, “I’m still happy as a pig to be pregnant! …I went shopping just last night for not just a piece or two of maternity clothes like I’ve been doing to get by, but a chunk of them. I’ve insisted on still dressing myself, but the rubber band holding together my favourite jeans is just getting old and uncomfortable.” The baby is budding “Rock star” as Plumb says it is bouncing around while she is singing or listening to music. Keep checking her website for a new mix of ‘I Can’t Do This’ and new photos. Her website is www.plumbinfo.com . And finally… God moves in mysterious ways… An elderly lady was well-known for her faith and for her boldness in talking about it. She would stand on her front porch and shout "PRAISE THE LORD!" Next door to her lived an atheist who would get so angry at her proclamations he would shout, "There ain't no Lord!!" Hard times set in on the elderly lady, and she prayed for GOD to send her some assistance. She stood on her porch and shouted "PRAISE THE LORD. GOD I NEED FOOD!! I AM HAVING A HARD TIME. PLEASE LORD, SEND ME SOME GROCERIES!!" The next morning the lady went out on her porch and noted a large bag of groceries and shouted, "PRAISE THE LORD." The neighbour jumped from behind a bush and said, "Aha! I told you there was no Lord. I bought those groceries, God didn't." The lady started jumping up and down and clapping her hands, and said, "PRAISE THE LORD. He not only sent me groceries, but He made the devil pay for them. Praise the Lord!" The website regularly receives 'hits' from service personnel wanting details of concerts taking place in Germany and other counties, but recently they received a request for a Christian CD from a soldier in Iraq. The website decided to send the CD for free where it was a great blessing. From then on the organisation decided to take a step faith and set up 'CDs For Soldiers', which sends out CD's to service personnel with no charge to the soldier. One soldier wrote, "Thank you for the cd's and your support to me over here. The CD's are my only way of escaping this place. I ask you to continue to pray for all of us over here as we go through a lot and our lives will be forever changed. God is moving in many ways in our lives and the Iraqi's lives. I have seen many soldiers give their lives to God as well as a few Iraqi's. Again thank you for the support and prayers.. GOD BLESS!" It goes without saying this ministry does 'add up' over time and the website is now asking for donations of $10 per CD sent out. They will even let you know who your CD is going to.
