CompassionArt has secured a coup by bringing together 12 of the most respected worship songwriters for a week's retreat last January. In global unity, artists gave their services free to create an album of original songs. In an unprecedented way, managers and publishers, label bosses, royalty administrators and distributors pulled together to ensure that CompassionArt's first batch of songs will generate as much money as they possibly can to alleviate poverty around the world. WH Smith have announced that they will be stocking the CompassionArt album in most of their 486 stores across the UK from November 24th. Conceived by MARTIN & ANNA SMITH, the CD/DVD CompassionArt has already created a stir, even before the album and book (The Art of Compassion – Hodder & Stoughton UK) have been released. paulsmith@compassionart.tv

From the USA, BARRY MCGUIRE writes, “Bill Hampson in England is in the process of organizing a May/June 2009 uk tour for us to promote the Epiphany Trust, a ministry that he and his wife oversee for a number of different missions from orphans-in-Romania to handicapped-folks there in England and Wales. It's a great ministry. Also we hope to generate some sponsors for third world children. Just keep an eye on our www.trippinthesixties.com tour page from time to time and it would be great to see you while we're over your way. Blessings on you my friend!”

USA tenor, DAVID PHELPS is in Bangor, Northern Ireland next month. The hugely popular singer who has won multiple Grammy and Dove awards will give a concert at Bangor Elim Conference Centre on Saturday 15 November at 8.00pm. www.heaven-bound.co.uk

Watch out this year for the new book by NCM's PAUL DAVIS entitled "Gospel Music Times - The Authorised Biography of GEORGE BEVERLY SHEA". The main solist for Billy Graham for over 60years, Bev celebrates his 100th birthday next February. SIR CLIFF RICHARD says, “A 100th birthday is always a fantastic achievement, even more so when the centenarian is still commanding a public stage . The first time that I ever heard George Beverly Shea sing was in the Sixties at a Billy Graham crusade. I was really amazed and, if I’m really honest, slightly envious. He stood there and this voice came out that sounded so confident, rich and resonant. What also really amazed me was it didn’t matter whether he sang something ancient or modern. With the passage of time, things haven’t changed. He still sounds confident, rich, and resonant today, a century since his birth.” DR. JESSY DIXON (Chicago, Illinois, USA) writes, “It was my great pleasure and thrill to work with Dr. Billy Graham and George Beverly Shea and observe firsthand their dedication to the extension of God’s Kingdom. Without hesitation, I say that the experience is one of the highlights of my career. As a truly historic singer throughout almost all the 20th Century, George Beverly Shea is an icon in Gospel Music who has no equal in his interpretation of whatever gospel song he performs. I speak for all gospel singers past-and-present when I say that it is to your advantage to read Paul Davis’ great book."

The New Christian Music Radio Show just keeps on growing. DJ Andy Humphries explains, "The demand for NCM shows has become so great that we have had to quadruple our disc space on the website. We have recently gone from 1GB to 4GB's of ready to use radio shows. That means that currently we have over 125 shows to choose from. We think that for only £25 per year for unlimited access - this deal is not only good for subscribing music stations, it might also be attractive to artists who want to hear the broadcast standard mp3's of their songs getting played on air. This is because the show plays all artists who appear on the NCM discs. Filling a radio schedule 24/7 is never easy, we hope that anyone interested will go to www.ncmradioshow and at least download our two free shows, any maybe, come on board with approx. 300 radio stations around the world who are now part of the NCM radio show family".

A quick note to DJs & journalists about filling in the NCM Reaction Sheets… Please make sure you include your name and details (radio station, publications, countries broadcast-to, etc) on the form so we can pass your comments on to artists – it makes such a difference to the artists to hear what you think of their work. Also make sure you fill in a score for each song regardless of genre – use your professional judgement rather than personal genre preferences. Failure to return the sheets for 3 months in succession will mean deletion from the circulation list
The NCMdisc is now available to all bone-fide DJs, journalists, music industry persons, & NCM artistes on download on www.newchristianmusic.co.uk

The codes this month (NCM#58) are:-
USER: gospel & PASSWORD: sharp
Click NCM Media Downloads Then click on the button once you are in the website.
You'll get next month's codes when you return this month's Reaction Sheet.

And Finally…SUBMITTED BY PETER HONOUR (Orpington, Kent, England)

Failure to return the sheets for 3 months in succession will mean deletion from the circulation list

Watch out this year for the new book by NCM's PAUL DAVIS entitled "Gospel Music Times - The Authorised Biography of GEORGE BEVERLY SHEA" (Ambassador Books).

SOMEBODY'S RAISING THEIR KID RIGHT!

(submitted by Dottie Snow, Nashville, Tennessee )

One day a 6 year old girl was sitting in a classroom. The teacher was going to explain

evolution to the children. The teacher asked a little boy: “Tommy do you see the tree

outside?” TOMMY: Yes.

TEACHER: Tommy, do you see the grass outside? TOMMY: Yes.

TEACHER: Go outside and look up and see if you can see the sky.

TOMMY: Okay. (He returned a few minutes later) Yes, I saw the sky.

TEACHER: Did you see God up there? TOMMY: No.

TEACHER: That's my point. We can't see God because he isn't there. Possibly he just

doesn't exist. A little girl spoke up and wanted to ask the boy some questions. The teacher agreed and the little girl asked the boy: “Tommy, do you see the tree outside?” TOMMY: Yes.

LITTLE GIRL: Tommy do you see the grass outside? TOMMY: Yessssss!

LITTLE GIRL: Did you see the sky? TOMMY: Yessssss!

LITTLE GIRL: Tommy, do you see the teacher? TOMMY: Yes

LITTLE GIRL: Do you see her brain? TOMMY: No

LITTLE GIRL: Then according to what we were taught today in school, she possibly

may not even have one!

NCM News 253 3 OCTOBER 2008

HOT NEWS FOR NCM ARTISTS!! ... Under the auspices of the UKCMA & NCM, NCM artists are invited to perform at the National Christian Resources Exhibition that takes place at the Exeter(Devon) on 29 - 31 January 2009 and Sandown (south of London) on 12 - 15 May 2009. There is already huge interest throughout England for the events. If you would like to be included the NCM Sharing Show, you are warmly invited. enq@newmusicenterprises.com asap.

"New Christian Music (NCM) & UKCMA showcased a galaxy of different styles of music from soul, pop, country, P&W, to southern-gospel, something for all tastes. The four inspiring acts PAUL WHEATER, MARVA NELSON, LIZ DOYLE, SUE & WES DAVIS created a great atmosphere where many people commented on how impressed they were with the outstanding Christian musical talent on display. A big thanks goes to NATIONAL CHRISTIAN RESOURCES EXHIBITION for hosting the event. We are all looking forward to next year's events." PAUL DAVIS (Chairman of the UKCMA)

"A big thank you to both NCM & the UKCMA for the support you have given CRE in the past few days in Harrogate, Yorkshire. I have had so many encouraging comments back about how much people appreciated your music, uplifting and inspiring. Each afternoon I made a point of being on the door as visitors left to ask if they enjoyed the event. The response was warm and encouraging and many made comment on how much they enjoyed the music and worship over the lunchtime. For your encouragement 1300 people visited the exhibition on Thursday and together I do believe we have equipped the church with resources and renewed vision." STEVE BRIARS (ORGANISER-MANAGER, NCRE UK) "Thank you for including me in your showcase of NCM artistes at the Harrogate NCRE event. The NCM & UKCMA stand and the presentation of myself and fellow artistes was up to the usual high standards of NCM that we have come to expect. The Harrogate event itself seemed very well planned and something that anyone involved with Christian activities should consider attending in the future. God Bless. PAUL WHEATER " (WHITBY, YORKSHIRE) "It was a pleasure to sing at the National Christian Resources event in Harrogate. It was a warm, friendly receptive atmosphere and I enjoyed and appreciated the support of Paul Davis and my 'fellow' singers – Paul Wheater, Liz Doyle, Sue & Wes Davis . It was the first time I had sung at this event and this made it easier. The feedback has been positive and I feel satisfied to know that people were not just entertained but uplifted." MARVA NELSON (BRADFORD, YORKSHIRE) "It was such a great privilege to attend and be a part - along with my fellow NCM/UKCMA artistes - of the Harrogate CRE. The event is a well organised and very well attended event and it is very useful for anyone involved in Christian activities. It has a wide selection of products (church signs, puppets, books, staging, sound systems, tables and chairs etc...) and has many main organisations/charities/missions represented. It also has various daily activities (which included our NCM/UKCMA lunchtime concert) and is overall a very useful and much needed event in the church calendar". WES DAVIS (LEIGHTON BUZZARD, BEDS.)

“Evolved”, the new album from MARTYN JOSEPH new recordings of some of Martyn`s finest songs of the past 16 years, making it a real career defining addition to his catalogue. Songs listed include ‘Kiss the World Beautiful’, ‘Sing to my Soul’ and ‘Proud Valley Boy’.

Three time Grammy Award Winner and 15 time Grammy nominated, JAMES INGRAM will release his first inspirational album "STAND" (In The Light) on Intering Records/Music One, distributed by WEA. Ingram's first single "MERCY" an original collaboration with award winning Debbie Allen and James Ingram is the inspiration for this l project.

Encounter Worship Vol 3 from Fierce! Distribution is a collection of contemporary worship classics. Eighteen tracks, ‘Encounter Worship Three’ is a veritable international who’s who of contemporary worship songwriters: Hillsong are there with Joel Houston’s ‘From The Inside Out’, Reuben Morgan’s ‘Mighty To Save’ and Brooke Frazer’s ‘Hosanna’. Brits come in the form of Matt Redman’s ‘Beautiful News’, Tim Hughes’ ‘Happy Day’ and ‘We Must Go (God Of Justice)’ as well as Ben Cantelon’s ‘I Found A Love.’

MOYA BRENNAN’s live shows, with trademark intimacy and power, should be recorded and made available. ‘Heart Strings’ is Moya’s first ever live solo recording and features the prodigious talents of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Recorded at the Liverpool Philarmonic Hall and in Germany in October 2007, the fourteen tracks include three classic songs from Moya’s days as the voice of Clannad, including ‘Harry’s Game’, ‘I Will Find You’ and ‘In A Lifetime’. Drawing on Moya’s recent solo work with tracks like ‘Tapestry’ and ‘Sailing Away’- tracks that showcase both her skill at crafting evocative moments and her prodigious band’s skilful musicianship - the live show recording underlines just why Moya is known as the First Lady of Celtic music.

Created by New Zealand's high-energy worship songwriters, PARACHUTE BAND announces their latest CD ‘Technicolor’ which will be released in the UK in October. ‘Technicolor’ captures the electrifying and energetic sounds and songs of the New Zealand church. The songs were written with a deep passion about transforming one's life to that of a Christian. From "Come to the River" to "Living Rain," the songs express liberty in being washed in the revitalizing and refreshing water of God.

‘It's Time’, is a collection of favourites and two new songs from award-winning songwriter and worship artist BRIAN DOERKSEN. The 15-track album features newly-recorded, guitar-driven versions of Doerksen's popular songs such as "Hallelujah (Your Love is Amazing)" and "Come, Now is the Time to Worship" delivered with a "classic rock" twist from producers Philip Janz and Brian Thiessen. The new arrangements of his better-known songs will once again capture the hearts of worshippers while breathing new life into these modern hymns. In addition, the album offers two new Doerksen-penned songs - - "Broken and Beautiful" and "It's Time for the Reign of God," from which the title was taken.

DAVE CLEMO reports that he is “getting on with the album that contains 12 songs including two co-written with JERRY ARHELGER, one co-written with Jamie Jones and two cover versions. It's provisionally titled "Rise of the Nouveaux Poor" and once complete will be available from iTunes etc, plus selected indie record stores and direct from Dave himself.

Ahead of their 21st October album release, the Award Winning duo MARY MARY will be in London for Hillsong's London Conference at ExCel.

WOODY WRIGHT reports, “ Vonnie and I hit the ground running and found ourselves singing and sharing in five countries! After fun filled opportunities this Spring in Ontario, Canada with our Salvation Army friends, the Alexandria Men's Prayer Breakfast, a stop at the Crown Room in Brownsburg, Indiana, an Andrew Phipps TV taping, Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois trips and the Mark Lowry Senior Trip in Nashville - we really started traveling! The end of May and the first part of June took us to Norway for a half dozen stops. Martin, Jan Kare and Kolborn of the Gaither Music Club Finsland arranged for us sing to packed houses of Gospel Music fans in that lovely country. We had time to see the beautiful countryside and make many lifelong friends in Norway. We barely had time to unpack from that trip and repack for the Shiloh cruise to Alaska the next weekend. Vonnie and I, along with my Mother and a dear friend of hers enjoyed the Gospel cruise with Shiloh and Southern Charm. The very next week we traveled to Southern Indiana and Middle Tennessee for concerts with Stephen Hill, Mike Allen, Ben Speer and Reggie & Ladyelove Smith. Then the last weekend of June, Stephen Hill and I made our way to Amsterdam for concerts there! July's schedule was filled with concerts in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky. At the Alexandria, Indiana 4-H Fair where Stephen Hill, Vonnie and I performed, we were visited onstage by Bill Gaither. He brought his video camera and along with him came the Vocal Band, Ernie Haase and Signature Sound, Gordon Mote and THE OAK RIDGE BOYS! www.woodywright.net

GORDON MOTE joined a stellar cast of artists in the first Academy of Country Music Honors concert held at the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville Wednesday, September 17th. He honored his friend, the late PORTER WAGONER, by performing some of his signature songs in the tribute to the Country Music Hall of Fame member, who was awarded the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award posthumously. Other artists appearing included LeAnn Rimes, Amy Grant, Joe Nichols and Connie Smith. Gaither Homecoming audiences are familiar with Gordon Mote's spot-on imitation of the Wagoner, and he relayed stories, cracked jokes and sang songs in Porter Wagoner's voice, including his trademark hisses. His songs included "Satisfied Mind," "Carroll County Accident" and "Green, Green Grass of Home."

JOHN HEAVENS was featured on the BBC talking with Jazz broadcaster Linley Hamilton. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00dmh9b/

STEWART SMITH & his wife left New Zealand for the UK. After 10 years of missionary service with Operation Mobilisation (1998-2008), he joins a smaller missionary society called David Livingstone, Inc. The work involves orphanages in southeast Asia. “Based in Somerset, we'll continue to be involved with outreach in Britain. Performances will include a 'Keith Green tribute' set of Keith Green songs. It's important for the music of Keith Green to be carried forward into the next generation of young Christians. 01823-660868 (phone) stewart1991.om@hotmail.com

AMY GRANT & VINCE GILL will embark on a 15-date Christmas With Amy & Vince Tour on December 4, in Manchester, NH, and bring it home Dec. 22 and 23 with two shows in Nashville at the Ryman Auditorium. In their two hour program of cherished standards and newer seasonal fare, the Grammy-winning husband-and-wife team will be backed by a 12-piece band that features a horn section and two harmony singers, one of whom is Gill’s daughter, Jenny. “Some of our earlier Christmas tours were with a symphony orchestra,” Gill notes. “This time, though, we wanted to create more of an intimate, living room feel.” Plans are underway to work with local charities in order to give back to these communities. On Sept. 30, Grant will release her first new Christmas album in nine years. Called The Christmas Collection, it is made up of selections from her three earlier Christmas CDs—plus four new tunes, including “Baby It’s Christmas,” a song Grant and Gill wrote together. Keeping with the festive mood, Grant will tape on Nov. 11 an NBC-TV special, Holiday Celebration On Ice. It co-stars Michael W. Smith and a corps of world-famous skating champions and will air Nov. 30. One of the most beloved and respected performers in American music, Gill was inducted last year into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He is a long-time member of the Grand Ole Opry and winner of 19 Grammy awards. Gill boasts three best-selling Christmas albums of his own: Let There Be Peace On Earth, Breath Of Heaven and Christmas Collection.

YAZZ will appear on BBC Songs Of Praise on 12th October, the second of two programmes from Spain which also feature GRAHAM KENDRICK. Yazz will be in the UK immediately after the programme is shown and will be performing and conducting interviews.

Watch out this year for the new book by NCM's PAUL DAVIS entitled "Gospel Music Times - The Authorised Biography of GEORGE BEVERLY SHEA" (Ambassador Books).

55 years ago, GEORGE HAMILTON IV had a monster Number 1 hit with the cowboy tune "Abilene" which became an instant country-pop classic. Now this summer, the Grand Ole Opry legend has recorded a new, timely version called "Gasoline" along with some help from his friends "the Oil Spots" (aka The Moody Brothers). The single has just been released to all country music stations across the country. With recent audience reactions when George performs the song at the Opry, in churches and music festivals around the world, this new version may also be on its way of becoming a classic. The song appears next month on Hot Disc Rush Release. Here's UK Tour details:-

The codes this month (NCM#56) are:-
USER: gospel & PASSWORD: heart
Click NCM Media Downloads Then click on the button once you are in the website.
You'll get next month's codes when you return this month's Reaction Sheet.

And Finally…

James O.Fraser was a remarkable man who became largely forgotten as he laboured for many years in isolation behind the great mountain ranges of China’s far west. His work was amongst the unreached Lisu tribes people. In areas steeped in witchcraft, he fasted and prayed for years with hardly any tangible spiritual fruit. Through dark times he contemplated suicide, but clung on to God’s promises, until the day came when he knew he had reached the place of victory. The battle in prayer had been won. In God’s time there was a massive outpouring of the Holy Spirit in revival power, and in village after village where previously the inhabitants had been hardened to the Gospel, families responded en masse. Fraser reflected on his work and concluded the following: “I used to think that prayer should have the first place and teaching the second. I now feel that prayer should have the first, second and third place, and teaching the fourth.”

NCM News 251 12 September 2008

Contemp-jazz artist, JOHN HEAVENS (London) writes, “Thanks for NCM media feedback sheets. It’s always humbling from time-to-time but more importantly it acts as a ‘virtual barometer’ which cuts through guess-work about ones career path in this malaise called - music business. I am encouraged and thank NCM for the work to connect all the parts together, a kind of Godly tapestry maker! One commentator’s on a feedback sheet made the point that the lyrics were not consistent with the Christian ethic, ‘a fair cop’ Having spent years trying to make get a worship leading and CCM career to take off, I soon came to the conclusion that the good Lord wanted me in some other part of His mission. It was only when I started to explore the mainstream that things started to happen for me. I now have the privilege of working (and witnessing) to some of the UK’s top musicians , even Jools (Holland). All need to hear about what grace of God is really like as opposed the warped ‘Christian bashing’ message that our current British me, my culture advocates. I am sure that I would have not been able to make these connections otherwise. The Big City Calling project brings together the best of British Jazz & Gospel in a 12 piece band so please pray for times of blessing as we start to work together.” john@bigvmusic.co.uk DATES: Fri 12 Sep. Watch out this year for the new book by NCM's PAUL DAVIS entitled "Gospel Music Times - The Authorised Biography of GEORGE BEVERLY SHEA" (Ambassador Books).

WES DAVIS says that his new website is live & would like folks to have a look. www.wesdavis.co.uk

55 years ago, GEORGE HAMILTON IV had a monster Number 1 hit with the cowboy tune "Abilene" which became an instant country classic. The song appears next month on Hot Disc. Here's UK Tour deatails:-

JERRY REED, star of stage, studio and screen, has died. Born Jerry Reed Hubbard, he suffered from emphysema and was in hospice care. He was 71. Asked by NCM’s Paul Davis to account for his versatility, talent and success, he sets aside his joking for awhile and Jerry’s reply is philosophical. “I’ll tell you what I tell everybody else. I was never formally trained as a guitarist, a singer, songwriter or actor; but I did them all in my fifty one years in show business and, I think, been kinda successful. So, I know in my heart that God sends us all here with certain gifts, and I believe He determines the course of one’s life. I’m sure He provides whatever time and desire one needs to accomplish one’s dreams! The gospel song – ‘A Brand New Me’ is absolutely biographical. I’m happy to say that I’m now well-grounded in my faith and love for Jesus Christ.” The song is featured on the next NCM
